If you’re a fan of chatting with friends and family through Facebook, developer SHAPE Services has a treat for you, and just in time for the Labor Day weekend here in the U.S. -- IM+ Video is a new free app offering unrestricted video and voice calls to and from your iPhone through Facebook.
SHAPE Services has announced the availability of IM+ Video, a new app for the iPhone and iPod touch that allows video and voice calls through Facebook -- and did we mention that it was absolutely free? The app marks the debut of Facebook video chat on the iPhone, complemented by a sleek user interface with three different themes.
“IM+ Video is here to take the vacant position of all-in-one Facebook chat application on your iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad,” the app description reads. “With its ultimate selection of features and sleek minimalistic interface, IM+ Video is a must-have app for everyone who uses Facebook to stay in touch with friends, family and colleagues on everyday basis.”
SHAPE Services is quick to note that IM+ Video is first to make video and voice calls via Facebook on iOS -- even the social network themselves have yet to implement the service, which launched earlier this summer in conjunction with Skype. Best of all, the app has no carrier or network restrictions -- calls can be made via Wi-Fi, 3G or EDGE, depending on what your iOS device has access to at the moment.
IM+ Video taps into Facebook chat, so all of your Facebook friends are available at any time with a simple tap to call or chat, and calls can be easily returned with a tap as well. Users will have a complete conversation history and event log for each of their Facebook contacts, and friends can even send photos back and forth from either the camera or photo library.
Finally, IM+ Video taps into push notifications and iOS multitasking so you’ll always be available. The app also includes a built-in web browser and you can customize the interface a bit with your choice of three themes (Simple White, Paper and Racing).
IM+ Video is now available on the App Store and it’s absolutely free; the 12.2MB download is compatible with any iOS device running iOS 4.0 or later, which includes the iPad -- but take note, it’s not a universal app so for now it won’t be an ideal solution.
