Failing Time Capsules Woe Consumers

The wireless hard drives known as Apple's Time Capsule still seem to be experiencing power failures. Without warning, the drives are shutting off and some seem to think that it is due to bad power supplies, others have suggested that the problem might be due to chips or connectors. Models from early 2008 seem to be having the most difficulty.
Many drives contain consumers' sensitive data, making the issue extremely concerning. Apple Genius staff are being accused of evading the issue, offering only to repair the units for up to $499, without an option to recover or transfer existing data. Many are suggesting a cheaper route of buying a new Time Capsule or opening the dead capsule to try and use an external enclosure to recover the data.
