Don’t say we didn’t warn you: Apple appears to planning the imminent release of new AirPort Extreme Base Station and Time Capsule models, with confirmation coming from none other than the FCC. Anyone in the market for some new networking products?
9to5Mac is reporting that updated AirPort Extreme Base Station and Time Capsule models are imminent, arriving perhaps as early as Tuesday morning. A source named “Mr. X” dropped the new part numbers on the website, outing a fifth-generation AirPort Extreme as well as fourth-generation Time Capsules in both 2TB and 3TB flavors, a storage bump of 1TB for each.
The part numbers are as such:
MD031LL/A – AIRPORT EXTREME 802.11N (5TH GEN)- USA
MD032LL/A – TIME CAPSULE 2TB (4TH GENERATION) – USA
MD033LL/A – TIME CAPSULE 3TB (4TH GENERATION) – USA
Right on the heels of this news, the FCC database confirmed the AirPort Extreme Base Station update with the marketing model number A1408. Engadget explains that the filing reveals hints of a “three-stream standard for 450Mpbs over both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.” That would certainly be a welcome change if so, given that only current Macs can take advantage of the much faster 5GHz band.
There’s no confirmation yet on the rumored Software Update caching believed to be coming in the new AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule refresh, but it does look like the networking boxes are about to get a little cheaper at any rate. Stay tuned!
Updated: Like clockwork, Apple has posted new 2TB and 3TB Time Capsule information, although the AirPort Extreme appears to remain the same.
