A couple of days ago we received a confirmation from Square Enix that the rumors surrounding the iOS release of Final Fantasy III were true. The original Final Fantasy III never came to the United States(except for the 2006 Nintendo DS remake), so every opportunity RPG fans get to play it is a cause for celebration. However, despite the confirmation there was still one small hole left in the story that we were left wondering about: what version of Final Fantasy III will the port be based on?
Will it be a lazy port of the original NES coding? Or would it be a scaled down port of the Nintendo DS version that was released in 2006? Let's just say that the former would have been markedly less exciting than the latter. No need for worry though because just a couple days after the original announcement, Square Enix has announced that the game will be based off of the vastly better Nintendo DS version. In fact, the upcoming iOS version will actually be enhanced even further with higher resolution graphics and touch screen controls (not just virtual buttons.)
This version features a completely overhauled graphics engine and brand new cutscenes that bring the experience to life. In many cases the game was completely rebuilt. The simplistic NES environments could not have functioned in their old state with the new graphics support. However, the important parts of the game remain. The influential "job" system of juggling character classes, and the epic storyline remain an integral part of the package. But watch out, if you're not used to playing old school RPGs these old Final Fantasy games can be shockingly difficult.
