After a long journey, the iOS port of the classic PlayStation strategy RPG Final Fantasy Tactics is finally ready for public consumption. The only problem is that you might wince when you see its price tag.
After a couple of delays that kept Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions out of the App Store, the game is finally here, and retro gaming fans are rejoicing. Mostly because they no longer have to lug their PSP around with them to play the only coherent version of the game in existence (the original PlayStation game suffered from a bad translation that also tried to be Shakespearean.)
Tactics is a turn-based strategy role-playing game. Which means it's a lot like a normal RPG in that you pick a party of characters to battle with, then take turns casting abilities and hitting enemies. The difference here is that Tactics takes place on a grid map filled with obstacles and landforms. Rather than simply standing in a line and hitting each other like a normal RPG, you must maneuver your characters around to fight the enemy and mitigate damage.
Even considering its age, this is still a fantastic game and well worth a try for the uninitiated. The only issue is that its price is truly colossal for an iOS game. It's running at $16.99, which is the highest price for an iOS game we've seen in a long while. And certainly the highest price we've ever seen for a port of a port of a game.
Square Enix has been pushing the envelope on game prices on the App Store for years now. It seems like they may be intent on changing the entire market to accept higher priced handheld games.
