Less than five months after introducing their new Chrome-based browser update, Flock has announced that they’re putting a stake in the heart of the original “social web browser,” ending support as of April 26.
Flock announced this week that they’re finally waving the white flag on their social web browser, which will officially be discontinued on April 26. But rather than concede defeat to newcomer RockMelt, Flock, Inc. is recommending either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for existing customers.
“Support for Flock browsers will be discontinued as of April 26th, 2011,” the company announced on the home page of their website this week. “We would like to thank our loyal users around the world for their support, and we encourage the Flock community to migrate in the coming weeks to one of the recommended web browsers listed below.”
Citing security concerns, Flock is recommending Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for their Flock replacement over their more recent competitor, RockMelt, which beat them to the Chrome-based punch last year.
“Since no further security updates will be provided to keep you safe on the web, we encourage all Flock users to upgrade to one of the two browsers listed below,” the website said. “Both are based on the same reliable technologies as Flock, and both are being actively maintained and improved. Also, each of the following browsers has a broad selection of add-ons and extensions to customize and extend their capabilities.”
Flock is also maintaining an extensive FAQ page on their website to address any issues may have. Since most of the Flock team joined Zynga in January of this year, the company isn’t blaming the demise of the social web browser on the competition, but rather their work with Zynga “in achieving their goal of building the most fun, social games available to anyone, anytime -- on any platform.”
