On the heels of a previous one-minute spot, Apple is back with four new thirty-second ads targeted at nationwide television, all devoted to the futuristic new iPhone 4 feature, FaceTime. TechCrunch is reporting that Apple has unleashed four new ads touting the funtastic goodness of FaceTime, the iPhone 4 exclusive feature that allows video calls to finally become reality at last -- providing that you have a Wi-Fi connection, that is.
The new spots follow the same pattern as the lengthier ad unveiled with the handset at WWDC 2010, which was later trimmed to one minute for television. Apple takes everyday situations we’ve all faced before and shows you how FaceTime can improve them in dramatic ways. “Smile” finds a girl talking to her father on the iPhone 4, but she refuses to smile. He finally starts singing, which makes her smile, and it reveals her new braces.
“Meet Her” involves a son showing his father his new granddaughter for the first time. The grandfather gets choked up.
“Haircut” has a girlfriend calling a boyfriend to show off her new short haircut. Rather than having to describe it, she can actually show it. The boyfriend agrees it is short, but loves it.
“Big News” is the closest to the original one. In it, a wife calls a husband to give him some big news: she’s pregnant.
TechCrunch notes that Apple appears to be focusing on FaceTime to help sell the new iPhone 4, since other actually more impressive features such as the Retina Display are much more difficult to advertise without actually seeing them first-hand. However, they’re also missing the boat on the “shoot HD video, edit it and send to loved ones” bandwagon, although that will likely come later down the road, maybe when the FaceTime “tug at our heart strings” thing has worn itself out.
