Earlier this year, Foursquare added the ability to leave "tips" in a location for a friend, or the next person who checked into that location after you. Today, they expanded on that idea to bring users something called "Location Layers." The location layers give you the ability to subscribe to updates from a variety of different content publishers to provide push updates about a location you're visiting.
Currently on the bandwagon with this idea is IFC (Independent Film Channel) and the Huffington Post. This means that when you subscribe to updates from these sources and check into a location where local news is happening, these sources will be able to send you a notification from within the application.
While this idea is really cool, it also shows the power of location-based social networking. Imagine checking into a location and receiving breaking news about something happening down the street. It could be news that pertinent to you, or it could be just some information about the location you're visiting. This could end up being a great way to read news and get updates on events going on around you.
