Major networks like Fox, ABC and NBC have made it easy for people like me to stay tuned to the latest television shows without spending a penny on cable, or even physically owning a television set. However, Fox's decision yesterday on how quickly it posts new episodes to the web seems to have sparked a trend, as networks like ABC are considering following suit.
During a company earnings call, CEO Bob Iger hinted that Disney's ABC network would also be pulling back how quickly it posts its shows to the web. Iger said that he was all for digital distribution of the shows via services like Hulu and Netflix, but as long as it didn't sever the relationships he had with cable companies who pay for the rights to the shows. "The relationship that we have with the distributors is a very valuable one, and it’s one that we aim to respect by both protecting what we currently have and determining or figuring out ways that we can expand on it," he said in the earnings call.
When asked about whether or not ABC will follow in Fox's footsteps, Iger replied, "You are right in your assessment that we’ll basically push the window back or make access to the programming more difficult or later, except if customers are authenticated as a subscriber."
Well, looks like when fall shows start up again, I'll have to wait a week to watch the past week's episode of Modern Family.
