France Wants Apple to Share iPhone With Other Carriers
The French government has informed Apple that it must make the iPhone available to other French carriers. Currently, the 3G device is only offered by Orange, a subsidiary of France Telecom. Back in September, Orange competitors Bouygues Telecom SA filed a complaint with the Competition Council about the exclusivity of the iPhone. The Council responded saying that the Apple-Orange agreement posed a “serious and immediate threat” to competition with other carriers.
It’s likely it will take a year or more before a decision is released. Both SFR and Bouygues Telecom hope to begin selling the handsets soon.
