One of our personal favorite games from all of 2010 has gone on sale and is now available for less than a candy bar. We listed Game Dev Story in our collection of the Top 10 Games for Avoiding Christmas Boredom, and the anti-boredom quotient has quadrupled now that the game has dropped it's price from $4 to $1.
In Game Dev Story [iTunes Link] you star as the president of a newly founded video game development studio. You decide every moment of the studio's 20 year lifespan from what games will be developed to when you'll take risks on the design. Everything is completely up to you. Do you want to create the next epic space-faring action-RPG, called Mass Affect? Or how about a high fantasy role playing game called Finer Fantasy? Will you develop for the Intendro IES (Nintendo NES)? Or the Senga Exodus (Sega Genesis)?
One of the neatest aspects of the game is how time passes by. As the years blaze by you'll be developing new games and projects, hiring new employees, making strategic decisions etc. But the time that passes is essentially the history of video games. PC games rule at the beginning of the game until certain famous game consoles come into play, then handheld systems arrive, and before you know it you're developing for (parodies of) modern day systems.
The game's sense of humor is also spot-on, and had us chuckling more than a few times. That said, this isn't a game for everyone like Angry Birds. If you don't generally care about gaming then it's likely that most of Game Dev Story will not appeal to you.
There's no word yet on whether the game is on sale or if it's permanently price-reduced so get to it before you lose your chance.
