While Adobe Photoshop is the image editor of choice for many Mac users, its high price keeps it from being an option for many of us -- so the news that free alternative GIMP now comes with a Mac OS X installer is like music to our ears.
Lifehacker is reporting that the freely distributed GNU Image Manipulation Program -- better known as simply GIMP -- has taken a big step forward this week by including a standard DMG installer on Mac OS X.
While that may not seem so newsworthy since the majority of OS X apps install this way these days, those who have ever tried to install GIMP -- which previously required installation of Apple's X11 first -- will certainly be rejoicing over this news.
"This is a GIMP 2.8 DMG installer," the downloads page for version 2.8.2 reads. "Just open the downloaded DMG and drag 'GIMP.app' into your 'Applications' folder."
Of course, if you're the type who likes to do things the hard way, an X11 build is still available from the same downloads page on the GIMP website, so… have at it, folks.
