Gyro Air Drums Puts iPhone 4's Gyroscope to Use

Apps that take advantage of the iPhone 4's gyroscope, its extra motion axis, are slowly rolling out. Until now, they've mostly been games or augmented reality apps, but Gyro Air Drums does something a little different: it uses the gyroscope to make music.
The app essentially turns your iPhone into a "virtual drumstick." You wave it around and tap on the virtual drums. Like a real set, changing and rotating the position of your phone allows you to play various drums on upper and lower levels. As you move, your screen reflects the various instruments.
You can only hit one drum at a time, but at least you play the bass drum by tapping the screen. So, with a little practice, you could play a simple rock beat without two phones. We can only imagine how much cooler Gyro Air Drums would be with two phones. With one, the app seems a little limited, but we're glad developers are at least putting the gyroscope to innovative use.
A lite version is available for free, and the full version is $2.99 at the app store.
