Hulu Desktop Arrives -- Hates on Apple TV
Posted 05/28/2009 at 3:01:35pm | by Roberto Baldwin

Today Hulu jumped into the desktop media center game with its new Hulu desktop app. The new Hulu Desktop allows Mac users to utilize the Apple Remote to control the app much like Front Row and XBMC apps like Boxee and Plex.

Hulu has been waging an ongoing war with media center app Boxee concerning Boxee's ability to stream Hulu content via the app. Some of Hulu's content providers weren't comfortable with Hulu content being available from within the app.

This release would negate some of the "last ten feet" issues user had with the Hulu site. The ability to navigate the sites content with a remote in the Hulu Desktop app should please fans of the site.

Hulu made sure to add the Apple TV to list of devices the software is prohibited from being installed on in the EULA.

You may not download, install or use the Hulu Software on any device other than a Personal Computer including without limitation digital media receiver devices (such as Apple TV), mobile devices )such as cell phone device, mobile handheld device or a PDA), network devices or CE devices (collectively "Prohibited Devices").

Oh burn! This could mean that our dream of native Hulu on the Apple TV is dead. Hulu is rumored to be working on an iPhone app due in a "few months."

In order to partake in the Hulu Desktop fun you'll need to meet the following requirements:

- Intel Pentium Core Duo 2.4GHz (or equivalent)
- At least 2.0 GB RAM
- Mac OS v10.4 (Tiger) or later
- 2 Mbps Internet connection or greater
- Flash 9.0.124

avatar1 anti-hulu comment and 1 anti-appletv comment

1) Until services likehulu and itunes stop restricting international subscribers, torrents will continue to have the upper-hand worldwide. 2) Why bother with appletv when you can connect the MacMini to most flatscreen tvs these days?  Add a wireless keyboard/mouse/trackball combo and off you go!

avataranswer to #2 seems obvious to me

Maybe because the AppleTV is $400 less expensive.
