Giving even more incentive for casual TV viewers to cut the cord on their cable bill, Hulu announced Wednesday that their paid Hulu Plus service is officially out of preview, complete with a price reduction and availability on Roku boxes.
Hulu, LLC has announced the end of their “by invite only” preview period for Hulu Plus and is marking the occasion with a price reduction, from $9.99 to $7.99 per month. The service, which was launched on the iPhone and iPad over the summer, has since extended to select models of Samsung and Sony television sets as well as the Playstation 3, and as promised, is also now available on Roku boxes.
Best of all, preview subscribers will not only get the newly-reduced price, but also a credit for each month they paid the original $9.99 price.
“Since we're now offering Hulu Plus at a lower price than during the preview, your subscription fee has been lowered to $7.99/month, and on your next billing cycle, we'll also automatically credit your account with $2 for each month you've been a subscriber,” reads an e-mail sent to Hulu Plus subscribers. “In addition, we're now offering a 1-week free trial for all new subscribers, so we'll be issuing you an additional $2 credit since the free trial wasn't in place during the preview.”
Hulu is also making an effort to push new users to the service by giving existing subscribers two additional weeks for free (up to 20 weeks total) by referring friends to Hulu Plus. Those referrals will also get two weeks free on their first month of subscription.
About the only thing missing from Hulu Plus now is more content and maybe adding the second-generation Apple TV as a playback device -- Hulu says it’s working hard to add new content, but we’ll have to sit and wait to see if Hulu Plus follows Netflix onto the Apple TV.
