The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are turning, and now begins the time of year when curling up in front of the fireplace with a great book on the iPad sounds fantastic. Thankfully, the fine folks at Humble Bundle are offering a nice collection of titles to keep you occupied through autumn. Even better: you can pay what you want for the books, and give the proceeds to charities.
Over the past two years, the Humble Bundle has turned into a bit of a wonder in the indie videogame scene. The premise of the Humble Indie Bundles are simple: provide a collection of DRM-free games at a price set by the consumer, and let the buyer also decide who receives the cash.
Honestly, the now rather regular bundles are one of the best ways to get your hands on amazing indie games. Now, the Humble eBook Bundle is taking the limited-time sale setup to the literary medium.
Starting today -- and running over the next two weeks -- pay what you want for six novels. If you pay more than the average -- $9.95 as of this writing -- you'll also receive two more books. According to the Humble Bundle site, the eight ebooks purchased separately would cost about $52. Not a bad deal.
The eight novels and story collections feature the work of authors like Neil Gaiman, John Scalzi, Cory Doctorow, and Kelly Link. And if the books seem to share a similar science fiction and fantasy vibe, that's no mistake. The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America joins Electronic Frontier Foundation and Child's Play as one of the three charities benefiting from the bundle.
Of course, it's also possible to assign your entire payment to a particular writer, or even the Humble Bundle group itself. Just use the handy sliders on the site to come up with your own unique way to spread the wealth.
