The iPad 2 is an amazing device capable of all sorts of wonderous feats, but it just doesn't have the awesome 3D whizzbang gadgetry of some other new devices. i3D is hoping to change that with a new 3D app that brings glasses-free 3D to the iPad. We can't wait for this software to be licensed and used in actual apps.
If you haven't seen - or don't remember - the video from last month then you can check it out below. Suffice to say that it's very exciting stuff for iOS gaming and just about any app you can imagine. From Star Walk to Angry Birds , there aren't many apps in the App Store that wouldn't benefit from a little 3D tossed in for fun.
Now i3D has released the software as a free download for all iPad 2 owners to check out and play with. The free app doesn't have much functionality, but it does give you a glimpse into the future of what iPad apps may look like. The app utilizes facial tracking using the iPad's front camera to adjust the display based on where it perceives your face to be. Then it uses the data to adjust the positions of the objects on-screen in real-time, making them appear to be stationary 3D objects that you're viewing through a window.
With 3D being the latest fad in consumer electronics it was only a matter of time before somebody figured out a way to make it possible without expensive 3D display technology (e.g. the Nintendo 3DS.) It will be very interesting to see how 3D progresses on iOS from this point forward.
