Own a mid-2011 iMac and already starting to feel the squeeze with your internal storage? The wizards over at iFixit have discovered that last year’s 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac is capable of adding a second internal hard drive -- and is now offering the tools to do it yourself.
iFixit has announced the availability of the iMac Dual Hard Drive Kits, available for both 21.5-inch and 27-inch mid-2011 iMac models. While tearing down the 21.5-inch iMac, the company discovered “unused mounting points that were curiously in the shape of a 2.5-inch hard drive.” Apple may not acknowledge this capability, but the good folks at iFixit have found a way.
“With the kit, you'll be able to install OS X on an SSD for lightning fast startup times, while still being able to use your original hard drive for mass storage (and your optical drive for spinning those CDs),” the company notes.
The result is the $69.95 iMac Dual Hard Drive Kit, available for either 21.5-inch or 27-inch mid-2011 iMac models only, which combines all of the parts and tools needed to install a second hard drive -- along with “the clearest, bestest instructions on the planet to perform this install, for free.” Each kit includes SATA power and data cables, custom-cut 3M VHB double-sided mounting tape, two heavy-duty suction cups, a 26-piece bit driver kit and the spudger necessary to get the iMac open without damage.
Of course, cracking open an iMac isn’t for everyone, and iFixit notes that you’ll need to remove the LCD to get inside -- so be sure to consult the company’s online instructions first before ordering, and double-check that you have the correct iMac model while you’re at it.
