iFixit just received a new Apple Thunderbolt Display, and promptly, methodically, tore it to pieces. And this is why we adore them.
The dissection required the use of heavy duty suction cups, a couple of screwdrivers, and a spudger. Oh, and a few strong arms to hoist it up to the operating table and hold it down while the tech surgeons went to work. So what did they find inside?
Apparently, the Thunderbolt Display comes apart very easily, which not only provides some neat photos, but it suggests that the display is easy enough to do a little DIY repair, without stepping foot inside of a Genius Bar.
Inside, there were components that clearly separated the Thunderbolt Display from your standard LCD monitors. Some of those components include:
- a 27-inch (diagonal) TFT active-matrix LCD with a resolution of 2560 by 1440 pixels
- an LCD display touting a 12ms response time and 16.7 million colors
- a Logic board packed with high-performance chips
- a 49 Watt 2-speaker sound system, including a miniature subwoofer
- a power supply that produces 250 watts of maximum continuous power

For more details and a complete breakdown of the specs found inside the Thunderbolt Display, along with step by step images of the teardown (and an example of what a spudger is) visit iFixit.com.
