Illusion Labs Previews iPad Gaming
Eager to get another look at what gaming might look like on the iPad? TouchArcade has some videos of mockups showing what it might be like. Illusion Labs has demos showing some really great touch-based action on a big screen. The screen is bigger than an iPad, but it gives a great idea of what will be possible.
They show Touch Grind (available now for the iPhone) on a much larger screen, and the extra visual area makes a huge difference. You can see things coming and plan ahead how you're going to kick-flip off one rail onto another. Likewise, their app Sway comes alive on a bigger screen. The iPhone version is a little tricky to get used to because there's not much margin for error when trying to touch the edge of things just right. The bigger screen makes it more likely that you'll move from one object to the next successfully.
They got especially creative in their demo of Labyrinth 2 for a bigger screen, somehow attaching accelerometers to an Apple Cinema Display. They were able to add a huge number of screen elements to the game. Obviously the iPad's screen isn't as large, but you get the idea that developers are going to take gaming on the iPad to a whole new level. The media may be surprised to find that what many of them called “another eReader” turns out to be the hottest new gaming platform.
