The ability to shoot and edit 720p quality video on one's mobile device can require a lot of firepower. According to Electronista, the upcoming iMovie for iPhone app may actually be iPhone 4 only, as it needs the A4 chip to power the video and real-time transition effects, said sources from Apple. For our iPad users, don't expect the app to head over there anytime soon either, because the device won't be able to adapt to the iPhone 4's 960x640 resolution. Of course there's that whole not having a camera thing either.
Of course there's always the chance that we have to wait until iOS 4.0 for the iPad before we get iMovie on the iPad.
Also of note is that owners of Macs won't be able to import their video projects into the desktop version of iMovie, at least at first. Of course though, finished projects will be able to be exported into iTunes.
The app is expected to go live at the same time when the iPhone 4 gets released on June 24.
While video editing on mobile devices isn't exactly new, this will be the first time that one can use live effects previews, or things like advanced themes. Now, while the iPhone 3GS is actually able to play video up to 1080p, it doesn't possess the capabilities to actually record AND edit it on the spot.
