Apple's iOS 4--sleekly renamed from "iPhone OS"--will be available June 21 for nearly all of the prior iPhone and iPod touch devices. All but the first-generation touch will get free upgrades.
The OS introduces many new features, with a version of multitasking headlining the roster. For example, you could listen to third-party music apps while running other apps. Additional improvements update Mail with a unified inbox and message threading, apps can be organized in folders, and you can choose the Bing search engine.
Enterprise updates include additional data protection and security, Exchange Server 2010 support, the ability to use multiple Exchange accounts, SSL VPN, and mobile device management.
Not all iOS 4 features will be supported on devices prior to the iPhone 3GS. For example, you'll have to replace your pre-3GS hardware for multitasking.

For the earlier versions of the OS more memory just meant more room for apps, music, movies, photos. Most of the memory was a flash drive, which is fine.
With multitasking in this version, and particularly with the new phone and a new processor, will buying a 32 GB phone mean better performance, or just more room for stuff?

There's been nary murmur about a new Mac OS. Wonder why? Because eventually "iOS" will be made desktop ready. And then all your apps are belong to Apple.
