Big news for Twitter users: Apple's upcoming iOS 5 software update will feature Twitter integration at the system level. What does this mean? You'll be able to directly tweet a photo you've taken from your iPhone to your Twitter account without having to go through yfrog or a similar service. One button tweeting is going to make the process a lot easier.
More than that, though, are the implications of this integration. First, users who aren't hip to what Twitter is all about will see this new option and might decide check the service out, which in time could lead to widespread adoption. Twitter is still thought of as a niche service, but if Apple can help make them into a must-have, it could easily push them over into Facebook numbers.
Second, if they can do this with photos, there's no reason to think it should stop there. Web page links from Safari, tweets from the Message app, Foursquare-like location tweets from Maps... it's all possible. Sign in once with your Twitter credentials, and away you go.
Third, what does it mean that Twitter gets this before Facebook does? Is Apple stepping up to the plate and challenging FB's dominance? Users in general seem to use either Facebook or Twitter, not both. This could be huge for Twitter. WWDC's right around the corner; stay tuned!
