iPhone 3G Pay-As-You-Go Ready
Erica Sadun over at TUAW has confirmed that the 3G iPhone will work just fine without a voice and data contract by using any AT&T Pay-As-You-Go SIM card with a data plan. No pwning needed, Sadun says that popping the SIM into her brand new, right-out-of-the-box iPhone “Just. Worked.” So there you go.
Of course, you can’t buy a new iPhone without a contract, so file this under “just good to know”? Gizmodo ponders that this might be a fine thing to use for international trips, so it could be useful after all.
Getting an unlimited 5GB plan to a SIM is easy. Just call 611 and select “Buy Features” - “Media Net” - “Unlimited” - “Buy It”.
Wait a second, 5GB unlimited plan? Oh AT&T, you tricky little mega-corporation.

I recently bought an unlocked 3G 8gig IPhone in Italy...where due to legal restrictions ALL IPhones are sold unlocked. I used the phone throughout Europe with no issues, and recently purchased an AT&T Pay As You Go sim card for use for the 10 days or so that I am in the US. All features work with the sim card except for texting. I called AT&T and they blamed the IPhone settings. I then called Apple, who confirmed that my phone is unlocked and should work with any sim card. I then called AT&T back, who again blamed the IPhone, and called Apple for a conference call at my request. However, the AT&T tech rep hung up as soon as the connection was made. The Apple tech rep (a different one from before) asked for my IPhone serial number and confirmed that it is unlocked and that AT&T's service is at fault. AT&T refuses to believe that their service is at fault, and so I still do not have texting abilities.
