So much for underwhelming! Apple announced on Monday morning that the new iPhone 4S has already topped one million preorders -- and that’s just in the first 24 hours. It may look like an iPhone 4 and quack like an iPhone 4, but the iPhone 4S is anything but fowl.
Apple issued an early morning press release on Monday to tout iPhone 4S preorder numbers, which kicked off in the wee hours of the morning on Friday, October 7. Despite an initial lack of enthusiasm by members of the press and even some iPhone fans anticipating a true iPhone 5 at last week’s “Let’s talk iPhone” event, the new model has topped even its predecessor in first day sales.
Last year, the iPhone 4 racked up 600,000 preorders in a single day, but the iPhone 4S has smoked that previous record with a whopping one million preorders in a single day. Not bad for a device many claimed to be less than excited about, right?
“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do.”
The iPhone 4S is already sold out on all three U.S. carriers and most everywhere else around the world, with the Apple online stores showing one to two weeks for availability -- but fear not, the shopping frenzy kicks into stage two this Friday, October 14 at 8am local time when the retail stores open and you’ll have your chance to kill and entire day waiting in line to get your hands on one.
