It's fair to say that the iPhone's AIM app is weak sauce, and so much so, that we felt compelled to use the phrase "weak sauce." That's turned around and you can now expect some nifty new features, and one that will probably leaving you a bit annoyed.
One of their new features is that you will get pinged when you have new IMs. Which doesn't sound that great until you realize that it will ping you even after you have logged off and quit the app. The new AIM is even letting you send SMS messages for freezies.

There is still no push notification c/o Apple, but AIM is using SMS notifications, up to 24 hours after you depart from your sweet instant messaging conversations. Speaking of SMS's, you can send free SMS texts to anyone in your iPhone contact list. You can also set up multiple accounts that support location awareness. With location awareness you can see buddies who are "near me," and you get the options to limit this feature to a few or everyone.

Finally, the lame side of the new AIM app. They have split this app into two version. the Pay for app, and the lame-o free app with ads on it. Now you don't have to feel like you are cheating web ad developers by using your iPhone because you'll get to see ads on the go while using AIM, because seriously, why would we pay for something we could get for free, even if dumb ol' ads are slapped on it.
