iPhone Capable of Playing 1080p HD?

As the Apple fanboy elite, our favorite product to mock is the Microsoft Zune, but with the introduction of the Zune HD, they who must not be named may have a one-up over the current line of iPod touches, bragging that they can plug one into their TVs and playback 720p HD video. We knew this picture, where Microsoft made a better product than Apple, wasn’t quite right, and now we know why. A resourceful guy with a jailbroken iPhone 3GS posted, on the WeiPhone forums, that the device was actually capable of playing 1080p video at 30fps, by FTP’ing a 1080p video to his iPhone, and recording the resultant frame rate. Suck it, Zune HD.
Of course, there’s a caveat. Apple intentionally underclocks the CPU in the iPhone 3GS to improve battery life, and 1080p playback would have a hugely adverse effect on the battery. Second, Apple (or any third party for that matter) has yet to make a iPhone to HDMI adapter, so it couldn’t output 1080p to a TV anyways. Third, and most important, this is a completely unsanctioned hack. For example, even though the Apple TV becomes more awesome when you install Boxee on it, it doesn’t mean Apple will ever allow it.
However, if Apple comes up with some neat battery tech, and crams it into the next iteration of the iPod touch or iPhone (this September iPod event is shaping up quite nicely, don’t you think), it would sign the Zune’s death warrant, at the very least.
