It has been two years (and counting) since the first iPhone was
released on June 29, 2007, but that first device sent a shockwave
through the cell phone industry that is still recovering from the
aftermath. Who would have guessed that this tiny little device would get so much credit, and sales... take a look at the sales.
All Things D is reporting that the iPhone has dominated the cell industry for the first half of 2009, with an estimated 25% of overall industry profits. “Our analysis indicates that Apple’s iPhone accounted for only 8% of
handset industry revenues but 32% of industry operating profits in
1H09,” said Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst that did the research. “With the iPhone and its Apps Store, Apple has established a formidable
smartphone ecosystem, which history suggests is very difficult to
overcome.”
Sacconaghi did go on to say that in the future Apple will need to lower their prices. Of course, we'd like to know how much percentage of the industry profits Apple will own if (or when?) they decide to open the device to more carriers in the U.S. and abroad.
