So this is an odd way to end the week -- Twitter is exploding with a gaggle of invitations to a Verizon event behind held next Tuesday, January 11, and the leading speculation is the carrier may introduce a CDMA iPhone at long last.
All Things Digital is reporting that Verizon Wireless has sent out an invite for a special event being held in New York City next Tuesday, January 11 at 11am EST at the Lincoln Center. Given that the carrier just overdosed on coverage earlier this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the pundits are hard at work theorizing on just what else Verizon might have up their sleeves.
“This just in: Verizon will hold a special event at New York City’s Lincoln Center (Frederick P. Rose Hall) on January 11 — next Tuesday,” writes John Paczkowski in his Digital Daily blog. “No details on its focus, but sources close to the company tell me suggest this will indeed prove to be the long-rumored Verizon iPhone announcement. Question now is will Apple CEO Steve Jobs join Verizon president and COO Lowell McAdam on stage to make it…”
Adding fuel to the speculation fire is that the fact that TechCrunch’s MG Siegler has also been invited to the event, which he claims is not typical of Verizon.
“I don’t typically get invites directly from Verizon to anything,” Siegler reveals. “At least not that I can recall. They usually send those directly to the MobileCrunch and CrunchGear guys. But this invite appears to very specifically be for me -- it’s non-transferable. Would Verizon send me such an invite unless it was specially about Apple?”
Finally, Jim Dalrymple of The Loop also confirms receiving the exact same invite, and it doesn’t take a degree in rocket science to figure out that The Loop exclusively covers Apple products… so feel free to theorize amongst yourselves. It’s gonna be a long weekend…
Update: The plot thickens, as the folks over at Gizmodo apparently have not been invited to the event by Verizon, despite claiming that they're "great friends" with the carrier. That can mean only one thing: Apple doesn't want them there after last year's major iPhone 4 leak. "AT&T, can you hear me now?"
