iPhone Saves a Man Trapped in Haitian Rubble
Dan Woolley was able to survive 65
hours trapped in Haitian rubble with a compound fracture and head
wounds because of his iPhone. Wired
reports that Woolley was
in Haiti shooting a documentary for the Christian mission
organization Compassion International on the impact of poverty when
the earthquake hit. Crushed by a pile of rubble, Wooley consulted a
first aid app on his phone to treat bleeding head wounds and a
compound fracture of his leg.
After the earthquake, Wooley used his digital SLR's focusing light to find a path under the rubble to a space where he would have a little more room while awaiting rescue. In the elevator shaft, he consulted his iPhone for advice on fashioning a bandage for his head wounds, as well as a tourniquet and bandage for his leg. Reading the app's advice that being in shock he shouldn't fall asleep, he set an iPhone alarm to go off every 20 minutes. Between alarms, Woolley wrote blood-smeared notes of encouragement to his sons Josh, 6, and Nathan, 3, in case he didn't survive.
It isn't clear which app Woolley used, but it is clear that having the app resident in his phone was critical in a situation in which wireless service had gone out. A search on “first aid” in the app store turned up nearly 90 entries, many of which are free. Sounds like something every iPhone owner should install immediately! Not expecting to be trapped in an earthquake? Neither was Dan.

This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love File Renamer seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It is the old what goes around comes around routine

This story is amazing! Cell phone applications really have a big role in our lives it could help us when we are in danger. One of the mobile applications that could help us is SafeTREC application. It has a panic button once an emergency occurred you can press the button to ask for help and ask for an Immediate response from your trusted friend or family member and if it’s a life threatening situation you can ask for help from the 911 emergency responder. This application also gives the exact location where the incident takes place using GPS. For protection try to check their website http://SafeTREC.com/

“Most attorneys take a case for the money only but Mr. Crim took an interest in me as a person and not just a dollar sign. He just about became a member of my family. If you want a lawyer who will do his best for [his client], and go out of his way and go the distance.

Dan is an amazing guy. I used to work with him at my previous job. I was very thrilled to hear they found him alive in Haiti. He is a very talented and smart guy, and this story just furthers that. Good thinking Dan!
