iPhone Tethering on OS 3.1.2
Posted 11/05/2009 at 2:58:30pm | by Cory Bohon

iPhone Tethering LargeMany iPhone users were dismayed when Apple released an update that killed the tethering hack for iPhone OS 3.1. Never fear, there's a new way to enable that good ol' tethering once again.

MobileCrunch has posted a series of steps that can help you get tethering on your iPhone 3G/3GS back in no time at all. It does require you to jailbreak and unlock your device (not for the feint of heart), but their post does a great job explaining exactly what to do.

Here's the basic steps:

1. Download blackra1n (Mac or Win) and jailbreak your device

2. Unlock your device with the blacksn0w application that's included on your device after the jailbreak

3. Install the custom carrier settings (IPCC) file from Mobile Safari

4. Enable tethering in the settings

MobileCrunch has the full tutorial with screenshots.

I'm confused, are you talking about all ready jailbreaked phones? Tethering is still part of the 3.1.2 update, without jailbreaking your phone.

Does this work for AT&T in the US? If so, I'm jailbreaking my phone as soon as I get home. Email me here: http://tr.im/DOA1

Thanks a billion.

If you are in the US and using AT&T, you do not need to jailbreak your phone. Tethering is included in the 3.1.2 software update (and a couple version back). Go to Settings: General: Network and turn on Internet Tethering.

avatarUh, no....

There is no tethering option with 3.1.2 and AT&T service.  There has NEVER been a tethering option with AT&T.

avatarNot sure how I got it!

Looks like you need to have a 3GS iPhone to get the internet tethering. I just checked my older original iPhone and that option is not available. Pretty sure this showed up when the carrier settings were upgraded by AT&T to enable MMS. Don't know what else to tell you guys, I have it and use it all the time and the phone is not jailbroken.

I am not sure why people think you can enable iphone thethering on a 3GS 3.1.2 firmware iphone. I have tried all of the different techniques that people have posted to no avail. Until AT&T releases a patch to allow it. I do not see it working. Thanks for wasting peoples time.
