The iPhone turned 4 this week! However, despite all of the success, the famed iOS device is still failing to reach most of the world, according to a report from Asymco. The way the iPhone product line stands today, it appears as much as 70 percent of the world will never use one.
Using data published by Deutsche Bank, Asymco reached their conclusions by looking at the number of pre-paid users as potential iPhone customers versus the number of post-paid customer as unaddressed by iPhone. As of 2010, this equates to 1.5 billion post-paid customers versus 3.7 pre-paid customers worldwide. That is an awful lot of potential App Store sales left on the table.
In his last conference call, Tim Cook commented that pre-paid markets have massive potential, and that Apple would "not be ceding any market". All of which lends more credence to the "prepaid iPhone coming this fall" rumor that has been flying around lately.
