Whether your iPhone is on Verizon or AT&T, one thing is for certain -- it shoots amazing 720p HD video. Unfortunately, Apple has hindered our ability to share such video, but thankfully some enterprising third-party developers are quickly filling this gap. The latest is Thwapr, which promises to share up to 30 minutes of video with a free cloud-based service.
Thwapr announced this week the availability of their free iPhone app, which joins the ranks of other models from Blackberry, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony, Dell, HP/Palm and others -- all told, the software company supports 300 types of mobile devices.
“Sharing video easily is a key next step for a mobile lifestyle," says Bruce Goldstein, CEO of Thwapr. "Thwapr's iPhone app provides a much needed and powerful experience in capturing and sharing life's video moments with friends and family and to a broader community on social networks."
Thwapr is the brainchild of Erick Hoffert, an ex-Apple employee widely considered as the father of Quicktime. “Making mobile video sharing easy is quite challenging,” Hoffert explains. “It has taken more than a year and half of development to build a mobile video app and platform that blasts through video duration, quality, and compatibility barriers to ensure a simple, fun, and fast consumer experience. And so we are excited to now launch this new way of sharing video into an increasingly mobile world.”
The free app allows you to share videos and photos to family and friends, either on their mobile phone or to Twitter or Facebook. You can capture video and photos in the moment or directly from the Camera Roll, complete with geotagging.
You can easily share videos and photos to individual or multiple contacts with a cell phone number in your address book, and even comment back and forth on your shared work. Push alerts will notify you when friends have shared, uploaded or commented on videos and photos as well.
Best of all, you can capture and edit video in both portrait or landscape modes using the front or rear camera of the iPhone 4 -- with full 720p HD when using the rear camera. The app also supports all other iPhone models as well as the iPod touch and even the iPad (although it’s not a universal app) on either iOS 3 or iOS 4 (background uploading is only available on iOS 4).
Thwapr is a free 2.5MB download from the App Store; it’s currently only available for users in the U.S. and Canada and the company is supporting free unlimited uploads and sharing for the time being.
