Apple has smashed the recent rumors of a pre-Christmas grand opening for the Mac App Store, announcing Thursday morning that the doors will instead swing wide open for business in just three short weeks, on Thursday, January 6.
Apple issued a press release Thursday morning to announce that the new Mac App Store will open for business on Thursday, January 6 -- just three weeks away, and they’ll likely go by quickly for you impatient types, since two holiday weekends are wedged in there as well.
“The App Store revolutionized mobile apps,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on January 6.”
Apple notes that the Mac App Store will launch in 90 countries, featuring both paid and free apps in a variety of categories, including Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities. Just like on iOS, you can purchase, download and install apps with just one click and start using them immediately.
The good news is that purchased apps can run on all of your personal Macs, with updates delivered directly through the Mac App Store, making it easy to keep everything up to date in one central location.
Finally, Apple notes that the Mac App Store will be available to Mac OS X Snow Leopard users only through a free Software Update download, which will presumably come in the form of Mac OS X 10.6.6.

So there's going to be an App Store for Mac, just like the App Store for Apple. I'm sure there will be thousands of views from the consumers of this product. The Mac App Store, Apple's new paradigm for buying Macintosh software, debuts January 6. Mac App Store poised to disrupt the software universe on Jan. 6. The Macintosh App Store functions on the Apple App Store model. Software for Macs could be bought, downloaded and installed as easily and easily as iPhone apps.
