Our long, national nightmare is over: Apple has squashed a server bug that was preventing iOS and Mac apps from applying updates correctly, and is pushing out updates from the last couple days all over again.
AllThingsD is reporting that Apple has fixed the App Store server bug which was causing developers and end users so much grief over the last few days. The problem, as it turns out, was related to the FairPlay digital rights management applied to all apps sold on the App Store.
“We had a temporary issue that began yesterday with a server that generated DRM code for some apps being downloaded,” Apple told AllThingsD on Thursday night. “The issue has been rectified and we don’t expect it to occur again.”
Although we never saw the issue on our own devices, many users were locked out of their favorite apps starting Tuesday night, when the issue was first noted by Instapaper developer Marco Arment following a minor version 4.2.3 update.
Afflicted apps would essentially crash immediately after launching, apparently caused by the device being unable to recognize the DRM code. Apple has pushed the same updates to these apps all over again, so users should download them a second time just to be sure the issue is resolved on their devices.
