Late last week, we reported that Apple was discontinuing their Xserve Mac OS X-based server product. Needless to say, lovers of the Apple pro product lamented such a decision, and one of them decided to tell CEO Steve Jobs about it.
9to5Mac is reporting that a fan of Apple’s professional product took to his keyboard and fired off a missive to CEO Steve Jobs to find out what was behind the company’s decision last week to kill off the Xserve in favor of pushing their server editions of the Mac mini or Mac Pro instead.
According to French website MacGeneration, the answer is simple.
“Hardly anyone was buying them,” Jobs replied to the inquisitive pro customer, an answer which doesn’t give much hope for a return of the rackmounted server anytime soon.
It’s a sad fact of life that Apple’s main profit engine these days is coming from its iOS-based portable products, which has many afraid that they may abandon their professional products. Here’s hoping this isn’t a sign that a similar fate awaits the likes of Final Cut Studio, which has been rumored to be on life support -- or possibly facing a more consumer-oriented future, which other Apple products such as iMovie already cover quite well.
