Just Like a Zombie, MobileMe Won't Stay Dead -- For the Moment

Still haven't made the transition from MobileMe to iCloud? The June 30 deadline has come and gone, but like zombies in a classic horror film, the service continues to hang around, at least "for a limited time."
As promised last year when iCloud was introduced, Apple shut down MobileMe as the clock turned from June 30 to July 1 over the weekend. Except there's just one problem: It's not quite dead yet.
Offering procrastinators one last chance to move their account or back up their precious files and photos, a visit to Me.com makes it clear that the service is defunct, displaying the red "MobileMe is CLOSED" sign to visitors -- but still showing some signs of life nonetheless.
"For a limited time, you can still move your account to iCloud, download your photos from Gallery, and download your files from iDisk," the website now notes.
While Apple isn't saying exactly how long "a limited time" might be, MobileMe is clearly not entirely dead -- after all, the preference pane is still on our Macs, and both Gallery and iDisk can be accessed.
It will likely take a forthcoming OS X Lion 10.7.5 update to wipe out any remaining traces of MobileMe on the desktop, but Apple has already removed its free Gallery and iDisk iOS apps from the App Store.
We also noticed a little funkiness with our iCloud email this morning, with email aliases going missing from our Mac Mail account. Thankfully, they still exist in iCloud, but we had to type them back in manually to get them to appear again.
If you were stubbornly holding out hoping Apple might change their mind and pardon MobileMe at the last minute, we'd say now is a good time to transition over to iCloud and back up your files -- the company is clearly about to put a bullet in the skull of this cloud-based zombie any day now. You've been warned!
