Famed Los Angeles Lakers player Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa were spotted at Apple's campus in Cupertino today, and the report from an unknown Apple tipster to 9to5Mac suggests that the basketball star might have been there to speak about the iWatch. The informant claims that Bryant was in town to speak with Jony Ive's team about "upcoming projects."
The precise topic of the conversation is apparently open to speculation, but there seems little question that the man in the photo is Bryant. Fittingly, one of the ways that commentators confirmed that the man was Bryant was by matching his watch with the one the well-known shooting guard was wearing in a photo. The background is confirmed to be Apple's Infinite Loop campus, and the photo's geotag confirms the image was taken today.
Bryant already has some experience in promotion watches via his work with the Swiss Hublot luxury brand, which — fascinatingly enough — Apple was accused of attempting to poach from earlier this year. Such a pairing wouldn't be out of place. Bryant also enjoys a contract with Lenovo, and fellow basketball star LeBron James has allowed the use of his image for a large number of Samsung promotional apps, commercials, and related materials.
If Bryant wasn't there to speak about promoting the iWatch (and indeed, the Hublot deal makes that seem less likely), it's equally possible that Bryant was in town to discuss promoting the "Healthbook" app that's thought to launch with iOS 8. The app will allegedly work hand-in-hand with the iWatch to track various health statistics, although it's likely that we'll see the app itself before we see the fabled timepiece. Adding fuel to the rumor fire, Bryant is also heavily involved with Nike, and Apple CEO Tim Cook just happens to be a director on Nike's board.
