Last month rumors began swirling that Apple and LG were going to release an Apple 55-inch OLED display capable of streaming music, movies and TV shows. LG reported in July that such a device would be released sometime in 2012.
Today, however, reports are in from the Korea Times that if the rumored device does come to market, it will not use OLED after all.
OLED is out, sources indicate, because Apple is concerned about costs as well as limited lifespan and color balance issues of the technology that can arise in larger displays. Apparently, Apple may use enhanced LG LCD displays for its televisions instead.
LG manufactures the Retina display of the iPhone, and is one of Apple's most critical partners. Analysts estimate Apple’s portion of LG’s operating profit for this year will soar to 45.1 percent, while the Apple contribution to LG’s total revenues for 2011 is expect to be 18.3 percent.
