Rumors running rampant on the internet are all a buzz about the sale of new Mac Clones this time AppleInsider is reporting on the sale of pre-made PCs capable of running Mac OS X.
According to their report a EFI-X USA Millennium 4 PC is going to be produced and targeting the performance crowd. It will be configured as follows: "a Core 2 Quad processor overclocked to at least 3.8GHz, 4GB of memory, a GeForce 8800 GTS video card and a high-speed disk combination that includes a 150GB, 10,000RPM boot drive and a 1TB, 7,200RPM secondary drive that holds the bulk of the computer's storage. Two DVD rewriters will also be included." and selling for under $2000.
Making things even more confusing there are two companies involved EFi-X and EFi-X USA and Art Studios Entertainment Media owner of the EFi-X logo and trademark has "denied officially any involvement with this Millennium project." according to AppleInsider. Visiting any of the site links above and it looks like everyone got cold feet there will be no clones for you! However, you can still purchase their USB contraption for about $200 and possibly build your own clone. A menu of possible parts to use is here. The EFi-X aka USB contraption is basically a small USB module that allows a stock PC to run EFI-based operating systems.
A quick Google search turned up another report on Tom's Hardware where they reported that "Several reports emerged this morning indicating that the company behind the EFiX USB module had jumped into the Mac clones business. According to EFiX creators, this was launched by an affiliate without authorization of Art Studios Entertainment." They are carrying a story about a conversation they had with Davide Rutigliano the CEO of Art Studios and Entertainment which is worth a read if you are interested in what happened to the prematurely announced Mac clone.
