Apple CEO Steve Jobs has teased some exciting changes are ahead for MobileMe, but a French website may have uncovered evidence in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion that indicates the service will be getting a new name as well.
MacRumors is reporting that some poking around inside the latest Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Developer Preview has turned up some interesting bits of data related to MobileMe. According to Consomac.fr, some text strings have been discovered which indicate that MobileMe will be upgraded to something codenamed “Castle.”
“Click OK to open System Preferences and complete your upgrade from MobileMe to Castle,” one of the text strings reads, referring to a key called “MigrateAccountText.”
Of course, the name “Castle” is a very compelling term to replace MobileMe, but Consomac.fr theorizes that this is simply a codename for whatever Apple plans to call its forthcoming cloud-based service. Just last week it was revealed that Apple purchased the iCloud.com domain name for upwards of $4.5 million, and the term “iCloud” now appears to be in the running to replace MobileMe. (You’ll also notice that Castle and iCloud are both six-letter words.)
Consomac.fr also turned up an icon as well as some other groundwork to indicate that Mac OS X 10.7 Lion may include a new feature called “Find My Mac” -- presumably offering the same location-based feature as the current iOS-based Find My iPhone, but for Mac-based laptops and, presumably, desktops as well.
