The iPhone 4 antenna design has plagued users from the beginning. And when Apple held a press conference to address the issues associated with the phone, they placed the majority of the blame on the way the way the user holds the device. A new report today, however, suggests that Apple may be prepared to release updated hardware as soon as September.
CanalMX (English Translation) has an interview with Marco Quatorze who is the Director of Value Added Services at Telcel, the cell carrier for the iPhone 4 in Mexico. According to the interview, Quatorze notes that the hardware currently shipping in Mexico is the same as the hardware being sold in the U.S., complete with antenna problems. Those having antenna problems will be able to apply for Apple's free case program through September 30th.
He notes, however, that Apple will be releasing new hardware after the case program ends on September 30th to combat the antenna problems. Of course, it is not yet known how Quatorze has such knowledge of a release, or if he's even authorized to speak on the matter, so don't hold your breath on new hardware.
Steve Jobs did note at the last Apple press event that the company would look further into reports of antenna problems and report back on the investigation in September, but it looks like we will have to wait to find out what the outcome will be.
