Although early reports claimed that Microsoft would introduce a new 2013 edition of Office to match the one it showed off for Windows earlier this week, the company has since confirmed that's not the case.
The Verge is reporting that Microsoft has confirmed there will not be a new Office for Mac 2013 product available to match the Office 365 the company showed off on Monday for Windows 7 and 8.
However, Redmond is planning an update to the existing Office for Mac 2011, which will add deeper support for SkyDrive cloud storage for opening and saving documents. The update will also allow Mac licenses to count toward the new Office 365 Home Premium subscriptions.
"We haven’t announced the next release of Office for Mac," a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge.
The move shouldn't be too surprising to longtime Mac users -- after all, Microsoft tends to historically stagger Office for Windows and Office for Mac releases, although many of us were hoping its swanky new Metro-style update expected later this year might finally merge the two products into the same release schedule again.
