Microsoft Office lovers, we've got some good news and some bad news: The good news is that the cloud-friendly 2013 edition has arrived and is ready for your hard-earned dollars. The bad news is, it's not for the Mac (yet).
Engadget is reporting that Microsoft has released Office 2013 and Office 365, the Windows maker's big push to bring its suite of software and services into the cloud with subscription-based pricing.
While the company continues to offer boxed versions of the Office software, they're clearly hoping you'll ditch this old-school way of buying and plunk down $99.99 per year for an Office 365 Home Premium subscription instead. In doing so, consumers will be able to install the full suite on up to five Macs or PCs at once.
But hey, slow down… don't yank out that credit card just yet, friend! If you decide to subscribe now, you'll be getting the same old crusty Office for Mac 2011 edition you're probably already using -- only those on Windows will actually get Office 2013 right now. Microsoft claims an all-new Mac product is "in the works," and yes, subscribers will indeed receive it as part of their plan when that blessed time finally comes.
While a University version of Office 365 is also available to college students and faculty for $79.99 for four years, you can still buy a plain old Office 2013 Home and Student boxed copy for $139 as well, while the Home and Business edition for $219 adds Outlook to the mix. Last but not least, a $399 Professional edition brings Access and Publisher into the fold, should you have the money and actually need them.
