Microsoft, in an attempt to jump on any bandwagon it can to stay alive, may be working on an open-source addition to its browser family. The browser would be based on the infamous WebKit, which fuels the likes of Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome.
CEO Steve Ballmer made several statements that indicated the company was considering pushing toward open source web browsing, and that the concept would be “interesting.” Ballmer still holds fast to his belief that users needed Internet Explorer to provide a proper Internet experience He also added that Microsoft would hold on to Internet Explorer so as to not stagnate innovation, something Balmer observes as likely due to the competition.
Ballmer was quoted as saying,"Apple has embraced Webkit and we may look at that, but we will continue to build extensions for IE 8.”
