When Microsoft took the wraps off its first retail store last month, comparisons to the Apple Store were inevitable. That is, until the employees decided to kick things up a notch by dropping whatever they were doing and dancing!
The proof is on YouTube, where the 4-minute-plus video has already accumulated more than 13,000 hits since it was posted on Monday.
It seems that cranking up a Black Eyed Peas song is enough to excite the employees at the Southern California Microsoft Store, who are seen breaking out in dance, letting their hair down and having some fun, as the video’s description explains.
“This is an amazing store,” writes YouTube user bkslavin, “the employees seem really excited and engaged, almost happy to be at work. My favorite parts are when people walking in the mall come inside the store, join in the dancing and have some fun.”
Of course, one customer had themselves a little too much fun. Around 2:14 into the video, a customer who’s just joined in the dancing can be clearly seen grabbing something nearby and shoving it into her purse, totally unbeknownst to the dancing employees around her, as seen in the accompanying screen shots. Is it a flyer? Is it a product?
“The amazing thing is that people are in the store for hours,” bkslavin concludes, “they love interacting with the software and learning about new technology.” And, apparently, helping themselves to things around the store when no one is looking...

I also predicted that device manufacturers will someday be knocking at Apple's doors asking to be allowed inside the iTunes walled garden. Lo and behold here comes the Palm Pre who doesn't even knock and ask nicely.

OMG. Microsoft feels they need to open a "Microsoft Store" to compete with Apple. Microsoft is 95%ish of the computer market now...so what? Let the masses suffer. I love my Mac Pro and wouldn't give it up even if begged by a store full of dancing dolts. Also, how lame was that? I mean people at the Apple Store are eager to do their jobs and in general it shows, this dancing thing is just INCREDIBLY lame...just like Vista.

The employees are doing a variation of the Electric Slide, which, if I remember correctly, was all the rage in the early 90's. Yes, early 90's; that's 20 yrs ago.

On some level I can't blame MS for trying to be like Apple. After all, Apple is Apple and no other computer/tech company has a following like they do. However, what would really be more impressive is if MS could give life to their own culture in which people could feel good about being involved with. Trying to make themselves over to be more like Apple just looks forced and gives them the appearance of simply being pathetic. Even if I were a devout follower of MS this would just seem sad to me.

This video is a great example of how employees in some stores goof off instead of serving the customers in the store. I'm sure Microsoft thought having their employees appear energetic seemed like a good idea but not to have them all dance for almost five minutes while customers are standing around waiting to be served. When I go into an Apple store the employees are energetic but at least they don't need to dance to a song to get my attention.

Rumor has it that these are former CompUSA employees "herd" dancing over the thought of being re-employed. The shoplifter is just there to lend a spot of color so that the Microsoft store will have that whole CompUSA experience.The only thing missing is the guy with the felt tip pen, rummaging through your bag and marking up your receipt.

That's less exciting than when people do that dance at weddings. Probably because there's no booze involved. The best part is when the camera pans over the customers looking baffled that they aren't being helped.

This is nearly as bad as the restaurants that sing happy birthday to you. It's one thing when a dance like this is organic to the people performing it but this is obviously just a Microsoft trying to make their employes look laid back and cool. The worst part is when I have to come in to such an establishment and have to buy something no one is there to help me because they are too busy trying to be fun.
I'm not against fun but when you are in the service industry I am not being served by seeing a poorly choreographed group of hipsters dance to an obnoxious Black Eyed Peas song.

Gee, what a surprise...what makes me laugh is that it was filmed, and nobody stopped this person. Of course, that also means that nobody was helping this person. Can't do that in an Apple Store; there's too many people doing their jobs.
