Wouldn’t it be nice to download your favorite YouTube videos, right from your iOS device? Sure it would, which is why a popular jailbreak app called MiTube exists to do that very thing. After making the leap to the official App Store this week, the free app was subsequently shown the door.
9to5Mac is reporting on the saga of MiTime, a nifty little app from developer Max Weisel that allows you to stream or download YouTube videos directly to your iOS device. After being a favorite with jailbreakers in the Cydia store, to everyone’s amazement, this week MiTube popped up in the official Apple App Store. Not only was it free, but it was also a universal app for the best experience on both iPhone/iPod touch as well as iPad.
Unfortunately, that’s where the good news ends, because MiTube has now been completely yanked off the App Store and is no longer available to download there. So what happened?
According to a Twitter post on Wednesday from the developer: “Just got a call from Apple Legal. MiTube will be down taken down within the next hour.”
It appears that downloading videos from YouTube is in violation of the site’s terms of service -- even though they freely allow such activity from a desktop computer. We’re not placing any bets that MiTube will ever return to the App Store again, but it’s likely to head back to Cydia with its tail between its legs soon enough, for those of you who need yet another reason to jailbreak your device.
