MobileMe Going Offline for Scheduled Maintenance Tonight, Could Signal Change

According to the folks over at AppleInsider, Apple's retail versions of their MobileMe service have been declared "end of life."
Apple has discontinued boxed copies of the software, and tonight's scheduled maintenance, has everyone wondering what's happening to the service.
It's not going away, Apple talked about the North Carolina data center being used to support iTunes and MobileMe during a shareholder meeting.
So what's happening? Maybe Apple is finally going to offer the service for free to Mac users, or maybe, they're just setting up a new feature for the iPad 2 announcement on March 2 which could include a new name, new features, and new price point hence the "end of life" of the current MobileMe.
The maintenance begins at 10PM PST and will last for 30 minutes. During that time, we can speculate like the criminally insane.
See you on the other side.

I agree with you. Make it more reasonable, the aspect I like is the synching of calendars and contacts with my devices, everything else I dont care nor want, just that feature.
I can see charging for online storage, as everyone else does, but for those simple features, MAC owners should be free.

I hope it is a reduced price for Mobile Me, the only reason i have to shell out money for it every year is that it keeps my Powerbook, Desktop and iPhone synced. (not to mention the hassle of updating hundreds of contacts that I have a new email. Gmail these days does almost everything Mobile Me does and its free. IMO Apple should charge (if not free) $25-$50, It just doesn't seem like it's worth $99 anymore.
