iOS and Android not for you? Windows Phone got you down? Tired of waiting for BlackBerry 10? If you're a developer, there's now an enticing new option from Mozilla in the form of Firefox OS.
Mozilla and Geeksphone have announced a joint collaboration to bring Firefox OS to the smartphone in a very big way, and the two companies are inviting developers to be the first to try it out.
Developed by Geeksphone in partnership with Telefonica, the Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone is powered by Mozilla's HTML5-based Firefox OS. The handset features a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor clocked at 1GHz and the unlocked, SIM-free device works on 3G HSPA and 2G EDGE networks around the world.
With a 3.5-inch HVGA multitouch display, the preview phone isn't exactly going to set the world on fire with crisp graphics, but it should be plenty for developers to see what Firefox OS is all about and start contributing to the cause.
While Mozilla isn't saying how much the phone will cost, the handset is expected in February. In the meantime, developers can use the browser-based Firefox OS Simulator to view and test their HTML5 apps, or even install Firefox OS on their own hardware.
