Sure, there are already plenty of App Store options if you prefer to get your music streamed via a subscription, but why not add another one? The legendary Napster has arrived on the iPhone with its own brand of musical goodness.
9to5Mac is reporting that Best Buy-owned Napster has just hit the App Store with a free app to stream more than 10 million full-length songs to your iPhone or iPod touch, including new releases and old favorites -- as often as you like and in the order you want them. Of course, while the Napster app itself is free, it requires a Napster plus Mobile Access subscription, which costs $10 per month.
The Napster app joins an ever-increasing lineup of subscription-based music apps that Apple has approved, which includes Rhapsody, Thumbplay, Rdio, Mog and Spotify (which has yet to come to the U.S. App Store, despite being one of the services most lusted after by music fans).
Napster for iPhone allows users to save songs, albums and playlists so you can play them even while offline, kick back with playlists, recommendations and Billboard charts dating back to 1955, create your own playlists for a customized listening experience, save your last 100 songs played and even automix your favorite song to create an instant playlist blending similar artists (can you say Pandora?).
Even if you don’t currently subscribe to Napster, you can download the free app and try it for a limited time, and the company is offering a 20 percent discount if you sign up for the annual Napster Plus Mobile Access plan. The 1.8MB download is available now and it’s compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad (although it’s not yet universal) and requires iOS 3.0 or later.
